Philippians: True and Lasting Joy

DAY 4 OF 10

Joy in Community

We see the blessing of living in gospel community. As part of God’s family, we have access to encouragement, tenderness, compassion, joy and love from God’s people. We don’t have to live alone or suffer in isolation.

Are you a blessing to others in their suffering? Are you a conduit of God’s grace and compassion to others? Or is your focus on your own life and circumstances?

The passage urges us not to do anything out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. When one is united with Christ, shares in His Spirit, then there is no room for such behaviour. Rather, out of the gospel flows an attitude that considers others better and joyfully looks out for other’s interests and not our own.

Are you someone who promotes this bond of love and unity or pushes your way to the front? Do you move toward others to bless them or use them for your benefit? When was the last time you had to sacrifice your desire and interest for the sake of God’s community? Is that something you pride in or is it part of your character and lifestyle?

We all struggle in this area. Christ is our greatest example of humility and sacrifice. Jesus counted us significant enough to die on the cross for us. He did not do it because we deserve His sacrifice but He did it willingly anyway. When what Jesus did for you sinks deep into your heart, it drives selfish ambition and empty glory away. How can I glory in myself when the King of Glory died in my place?

The gospel helps us to understand that the way to greatness in God’s kingdom is by serving others. To be number one in the kingdom of God, you have to be last and the least.
