DAY 13 OF 86

DEUTERONOMY 4:
Yesterday in our reading in Deuteronomy, Moses gave his personal account of how God led the people of Israel in NOT attacking three nations, but finally led them in attacking two kings. Moses pleaded with God to allow him to cross the Jordan into the promised land, but God refused to let him.

PSALM 51:
Today we come to one of the most quoted and most famous psalms, Psalm 51. David's sincere and broken-hearted prayer for forgiveness is a pattern for all of us to follow.

ACTS 8b:
Yesterday in the first half of Acts 8, we heard how the believers in Jerusalem were scattered by a wave of persecution following Stephen's martyrdom. Philip (the deacon, not the apostle) is given the wonderful privilege of turn many to the Lord in Samaria. My own thought about why the Holy Spirit was not given when the believers were baptized is because Peter really was given the “keys to the kingdom.” Peter was present when the Jewish people received the Holy Spirit, and when the despised mixed-breed Samaritans received the Holy Spirit, and when non-Jews received that same gift. The doors Peter unlocked stand open still.

Please pray with me.
Our glorious and almighty God, when the believers were still in Jerusalem, they enjoyed such a rich fellowship with one another. But you had told them to preach the message in Samaria, and from there to all the world. You used that wave persecution to send the believers out of Jerusalem. Samaria heard your message! Because of the suffering of the early church, Lord, I am reminded to ask that You would be with my listeners and anyone else in those lands where the followers of Christ are being persecuted. Give them the ability to stand. And through their suffering and through their testimony, may many come to Christ, just as people did in the city of Samaria. Lord, You don't give the Holy Spirit or the power to lead in the church through gifts of money or sacrifices of other kinds. Instead, the Holy Spirit leads and appoints people for such tasks. Lord we always are tempted to try to do your work by worldly means. Our Lord and King Jesus, You are coming, and not in silence. A raging fire is in front of You, a furious storm around You. The heavens proclaim that You are righteous, and You are the Righteous judge of this world. Lord, in our times of trouble we call to You, and You promise in Psalm 50 that You will save us and that we will praise you. Our giving thanks to you is the sacrifice that You desire. And You tell us, “I will surely save all who obey me.” Lord, be with us that we might be like those scattered believers. They went everywhere preaching the message.
