Why Jesus?

DAY 3 OF 3

Cultivating a Hunger for His Will

All of us know what it’s like to feel hungry, but food isn't the only thing that we can be hungry for. We can experience a lot of different types of hunger that influence our actions and ambitions in life. When we are physically hungry, we are driven towards physical food. But when we are spiritually hungry, we are driven toward God.

Being created in the image of God, we have an inherent desire for Him. God created us to be in a relationship with Him, so it’s natural that we should want to be with Him. The problem is, because of sin in the world, our innate hunger for God often leads us to quick fixes such as relationships, success, or money, that only provide temporary satisfaction, ultimately leaving us feeling empty in the end. Only God can provide everlasting satisfaction for our deep spiritual hunger.

Jesus speaks of a hunger and thirst for righteousness meant to reflect the relationship we have with God by aligning our will with His. Being spiritually hungry for God isn’t something passive that we wait for, rather it’s something we pursue and foster in following Jesus. Jesus tells us to actively seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness. In doing so, we cultivate a hunger for Him rather than the unsatisfying promises of the world.

We learn about God’s righteousness through His Word and in the person of Jesus. This is why it is important to find spiritual nourishment in both Jesus and the Bible so that we can live a life aligned with the will of God. Hunger for Jesus and His will doesn’t appear automatically, but rather it grows as we seek Him first. As we cultivate a rhythm of prioritizing Christ, His Word, and His Will, we will develop a greater hunger for Him that will be reflected in our lives.
