Cultivating a Hunger for Jesus

Bread is one of the most basic types of food that many of us consume daily. In the ancient world, it wasn’t just a daily source of nourishment but also a symbol of God’s provision. At the beginning of John 6, Jesus sees a great crowd of around 5,000 people. Noticing their need and hunger, Jesus takes 5 small loaves of bread and 2 fish and multiplies them so that everyone in the crowd is fully satisfied.

After performing such a great miracle, Jesus tells His disciples that He is the Bread of Life, meant to provide spiritual sustenance. Jesus redirects their focus from their temporary physical needs to their eternal spiritual needs. Through Jesus, God provided physical bread to 5,000 people to satisfy their physical hunger. In the same way, through Jesus, God provided the spiritual Bread of Life to us to satisfy our spiritual hunger. Jesus is God’s ultimate provision to spiritually satisfy everything that we are lacking.

The sin that once harmed our relationship with God was overcome by Jesus’ death on the cross. And having been resurrected to a new life, Jesus offers us a restored relationship with God where our desire for Him can be met and satisfied. As followers of Jesus, we will never be left hungry because God satisfies us through Jesus.

Just as we have to physically eat every day, it is important to go to Jesus every day to be spiritually fed. Physical food, like bread, satisfied our body but spiritual food, like the Bread of Life, satisfied our soul. While we will never be left hungry, it's important to always hunger for Christ. In other words, let Jesus be your greatest desire and find fulfillment in your relationship with Him.
