Bring Your Broken Pieces (And Start New)Sample
Bring Your Relationships
“I’m pregnant.” Christina’s eyes were locked on the pregnancy test as a million different emotions slammed into her. Her stomach sank. This couldn’t be happening. No.
She couldn’t remember the last time she’d even talked to Josh. Now she was going to have to call him and tell him that he was the dad of the child growing inside her. Yeah, she was definitely going to be sick.
She closed her eyes and rested her head against the wall. With a deep breath, she sent Josh a text.
What happened next was a blur. There were tears, discussions, and desperation, but one truth rang above them all: “Oh gosh, we need to fix this.”
The next thing she knew, she was signing marriage papers. She blinked again, and she was holding her baby girl in her arms. Suddenly, she believed everything had happened for a reason, because she loved this girl with every beat of her heart.
This could work. Maybe this family could work. She could close her eyes and see Josh and her raising this girl into someone better than themselves, and she loved it.
But the dream shattered quickly, fracturing into a million pieces. Postpartum dragged her down. At first, Josh tried to hide his own struggles, but Christina knew. She could read the signs.
She had a newborn baby on one side of her and an addict on the other.
Legal trouble and substance abuse were poisoning her family. It wasn’t long before the divorce papers were in her hand. She’d tried. Surely, God and the world could see that she’d tried. She lifted the pen, ready to sign.
But she couldn’t quite do it.
She cried out in a silent sob. “I've tried everything except surrendering. Josh is yours, God. You can have him 'cause I sure can’t fix him.”
Christina put the divorce papers away.
Sometime later, her phone rang. She reluctantly took Josh’s call, bracing for a fight.
“I think I want to go to True Purpose Ministries,” he said.
Christina’s breath caught. “Like, the place where they help people with addiction?” Christina asked, not quite daring to believe it.
“Yeah.”
Christina watched as Josh gave up everything for ninety days: his possessions, his pride, his freedom. At the same time, she got her best friend back. Finally, she could recognize that man she’d dated and fallen in love with.
Together, their world began to heal.
