Pathways to IntimacySample
Fast and Pray
Scripture Reading: “And then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying” (Luke 2:37 NIV).
We read about Anna, a widow who devoted herself to serving God in the temple with fasting and prayers, night and day. Her example is a powerful reminder of the profound intimacy we can cultivate with God through the disciplines of fasting and prayer.
If you desire to deepen your relationship with God, consider embracing the spiritual practice of fasting. Fasting is not merely a physical discipline; it is a powerful way to pursue spiritual matters. When you choose to turn down a meal or two, you signal your intent to seek God more fervently. With each pang of hunger, you are reminded of your deeper desire to commune with Jesus, hear His voice, and experience His presence.
Fasting compels us to lean on God in our vulnerability. As we become empty of food, we create space for our souls to hunger after Him instead. If you have found it challenging to hear God clearly, fasting may provide the clarity you seek. The connection between fasting and prayer is profound; as our physical appetites decrease, our spiritual hunger intensifies. This heightened sensitivity can supercharge our prayers, allowing our hearts to cry out more passionately to God.
In the sacred moments of fasting, the Holy Spirit works to reveal our true selves. We are humbled, stripped of distractions, and opened up to repentance and renewal. Fasting challenges us to confront our desires, prioritise our spiritual needs over physical cravings, and nurture our relationship with the divine.
Reflection:
Take a moment to consider your own spiritual practices. Do you feel distant from God at times? How might fasting help you draw closer to Him? Reflect on what spiritual benefits you are longing for and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in your fast. Remember, fasting is not just about abstaining from food but about feasting on the presence of God.
Activation:
1. Choose a day or a specific period to fast. Decide whether you will do a complete fast, a partial fast, or a fast from certain meals.
2. Set aside dedicated time during your fast to pray, read Scripture, or simply sit in silence, focusing on God’s presence.
3. Journal your thoughts and prayers throughout the fast. Note any revelations or insights you receive during this time.
4. Share your commitment with a trusted friend or prayer partner, inviting them to pray alongside you.
Prayer:
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of fasting and prayer. Help me embrace these spiritual practices as a way to draw closer to You. As I seek to turn down my physical cravings, may my heart be filled with a greater hunger for Your presence. Teach me to listen for Your voice amidst the silence and to pour out my heart in prayer. Let this time of fasting humble me and reveal the depths of my relationship with You. I desire to pursue spiritual matters and know You more intimately. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
