Pathways to Intimacy

DAY 2 OF 7

I Want to Speak Too

Scripture Reading: “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening’” (1 Samuel 3:10).

Imagine inviting a close friend over for an evening of connection. You settle in, ready to enjoy each other’s company, but instead of taking turns sharing, your friend monopolises the conversation. They talk incessantly about their wants, needs, and complaints, leaving little room for you to respond or share your heart. This scenario is not what a healthy friendship looks like, and yet, it mirrors how many of us approach our prayer life with God.

Reflection:

Many Christians treat prayer as a one-way street—a monologue filled with requests, complaints, and a list of needs. While it’s wonderful to share your heart with God, it’s vital to remember that prayer is meant to be a dialogue. God desires an intimate relationship with you, which means allowing space for Him to speak.

The Importance of Listening

In our fast-paced lives, we can easily mistake the loudness of our prayers for effectiveness. However, the beauty of prayer lies in creating an open dialogue. This requires intentional listening, making room for the Holy Spirit to impart wisdom and guidance. As you engage in prayer, you should constantly remind yourself that God has a voice too. When you actively listen, you invite deeper intimacy with the Father.

Pray and Stay

Sometimes, we need to adopt a different posture in our prayers. After pouring out your heart, you should take time to pause. Consider asking, “Lord, what do You want to say to me?” Or you might make statements like, “Lord, I’m listening.” Silence in prayer can be transformative, creating the space necessary for God to communicate His heart to you.

Just as Samuel responded to God, we, too, must cultivate a listening spirit: “Speak, for your servant is listening.” In these moments of quiet reflection, you may hear your heavenly Father’s gentle whispers, providing comfort, direction, or revelation that you desperately seek.

Activation:

Try this practice in your prayer life this week. After you pray, sit in silence for a few minutes. Close your eyes, focus on God, and listen. Write down any thoughts, impressions, or verses that come to mind during this time. You may be surprised how God communicates with you in the stillness.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me into a relationship with You where communication flows both ways. Forgive me for treating my prayers as a monologue. Help me cultivate our relationship with a listening heart and be attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit. May our conversations be rich and meaningful as I grow in intimacy with You. Speak, Lord, Your servant is listening. Amen.
