Receiving the Holy SpiritSample
What is the work of the Holy Spirit?
At the most basic level, the work of the Holy Spirit is transformation. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to transform us into the image of Jesus Christ by cutting away the flaws in our human nature, recreating us in the image of Christ.
This is not a rapid process but will take many, many years. This process also depends on us doing our part. We must learn the scriptures, apply them in our lives, learn to walk in the Spirit, and more. The list of scriptures that are included in this part of the Bible plan shows many of the aspects of the work of the Holy Spirit. When considering them all, you will note that all of these parts of the work of the Spirit are, in one way or another, about transformation.
Here is a summary of what each scripture shows us about the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 shows us that we are being transformed by the Holy Spirit, slowly and by degrees, into the image of Christ
- John 14:26 shows that the Spirit counsels teaches, and reminds us of the words of Jesus. Our job is to learn Jesus’ words so that they can be brought to our remembrance when needed.
- John 15:26 shows that the Spirit only speaks the truth because He is the Spirit of truth from the Father, and He bears witness to Jesus.
- John 16:7-11 Shows that it is to our advantage to receive the Holy Spirit who is sent to us by Jesus to do His work.
- John 16:12-15 shows that the Holy Spirit is our guide to show us the truth and declare the words of Jesus. He has access to all of the knowledge, wisdom, power, and love of the Father and Jesus Christ to help us in our walk.
- Romans 5:3-5 Shows that the love of God has been poured into our hearts through receiving the Holy Spirit.
- Romans 8:26-27 shows that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us to God and prays for us when we are weak and unable to pray as we ought for ourselves. And God listens to the Spirit speaking on our behalf.
- Galatians 5:22-25 Shows that the Holy Spirit brings forth the fruits of the Spirit in our lives as we grow and walk in the Lord.
- 1 Corinthians 14:14-16 shows the Holy Spirit prays and sings for us to God through speaking in tongues
- Ephesians 6:13-18 shows that the Holy Spirit wields the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, to defend and protect us from the attacks of the evil one. Our job is to arm the Spirit with the word by learning what the scriptures say.
These are some of the ways that the Holy Spirit works with us and in us, and unless we receive the Holy Spirit, this work cannot be done.
