God's Peace for Moms (Psalm 23)Sample
“And I Shall Dwell"
After you became a mom, did it feel like you got a new boss? A tiny, adorable, and very needy new boss? So dependent upon us, our kids lead us to alter our lives around caring for them. As days fill with the often mundane acts of diaper changes or meal preparations, perhaps you wonder if there is a deeper purpose in all you do as a mom.
Psalm 23:6 reminds us that no matter what season we are in, we have one constant purpose: to worship God. David concludes his Psalm declaring, “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” The Lord’s house, in David’s context, was God’s temple, the place where God lived and was worshiped. Now, notice how David relates to God’s house. He says he “dwells” there.
The word dwell means to live in, to make one’s home in. David’s home, the place where he lives his life, is worshiping in the presence of God. What would it look like for David’s reality to be the case in our lives as well? What would it look like for you to dwell in the house of God in this season of motherhood? To worship God in every moment?
The truth is, worshiping God is not limited to singing at church on Sunday. Being with God is not limited to a ten-minute “quiet time.” Every moment- rocking a fussy baby, playing peek-a-boo on the ground, washing and folding little clothes - in every moment, God presents us with the space to be with and worship him. As 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
As it turns out, your child is not your “boss.” Even as you seek to love and care for your child, you are ultimately serving and worshiping the Lord.
Today, remember that every moment, big and small, is an opportunity for worship.
