God's Peace for Moms (Psalm 23)

DAY 3 OF 5

“All the Days of My Life”

You’ve probably heard the adage quoted to you before: “The days are long but the years are short.” While this idea may be helpful to provide a sense of perspective, it certainly doesn’t make the days go by any quicker! I know as a mom, I can often wake up with a sense of just getting through another day… another day of preparing meals, changing diapers, getting my work done, and simply keeping everyone alive!

Psalm 23:6 meets us in our daily trudge and reminds us that every day, we are pursued by the goodness and mercy of God. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,” the Psalmist David says. On the good days and the hard days, God pursues us. When we feel like super-mom and when we feel like a mess of a failure, God pursues us. On the extraordinary days and on the ordinary days, God pursues us. There is never a day when God forgets or chooses not to pursue us.

It can be difficult to stay present to the moment. Oftentimes in the ordinary and mundane activities of the day, I find myself mentally existing somewhere else. But when we fail to be present, we miss out on experiencing the presence of God. God is here, in this day and in this moment. However ordinary the circumstances may feel, God is actively pursuing us, drawing us deeper into a relationship with him and transforming our hearts in the process.

When we believe that every day is of spiritual significance, it leads us to receive the gift of God’s presence and work within us. Today, seek to bring yourself to the present moment. Try focusing on your breath. Observe worries or anxieties as they present themselves, and then let them go. See if you can notice details of beauty in your child or in creation. All these practices help ground us in the present.

Remember, that wherever you are, there God is too.
