Jude: Contend for the FaithSample

Jude: Contend for the Faith

DAY 4 OF 5

Jude now moves to addressing the faithful followers in two addresses that begin with the wonderful words, “But you.” After addressing the apostates and describing the fate that awaits them, he moves to reassure the faithful. He points out that the apostles had already told the church. Scoffers will come! This is also a clue to the identity of the writer because he does not consider himself one of the apostles. Jude implores them to remember so that they will not be swayed or dismayed when those who are scoffers are revealed. In addition, he says that not only do they cause division, but they don’t have the Spirit of the Lord.

To avoid falling into their trap, the believers are encouraged to build themselves up in their faith. They are also to pray in the Spirit. This shows a distinct distinction between themselves and the apostates. We like them need to exercise our faith muscles as often as possible. In addition, we need to keep ourselves in the love of God. This is especially important for those on college campuses. We need to be in communities that remind us of the Lord’s love for us on a regular basis. Jude reminds them that if they do sin, as we all do, there is mercy from the Lord that leads us into eternal life.

Finally, we are encouraged to have mercy on those who doubt. There seems to be a progression in verses 22 and 23 in the way we are to engage with others. The key to all of them is that we have mercy on others. There is no room for us to adopt a holier than thou pedestal from which to view those who struggle with their faith. We are encouraged to engage with them as they struggle, but with some who are fully living in the flesh, we are to do so with fear. We would do well to be careful in the way we approach those whose struggle may trigger our own. Mercy triumphs over judgement and we all need mercy in some areas of our lives. Therefore, be kind and compassionate to those who struggle.

About this Plan

Jude: Contend for the Faith

College Students face a daunting task as believers in Jesus. They are always in the minority on their campuses unless they go to a Christian University or College. The short book of Jude gives some practical advice about following Jesus and contending for the Faith delivered once for all to the saints.
