Old Testament Overview

DAY 45 OF 104

The word 'covenant' occurs about 280 times in the Old Testament. It occurs 8 times in Leviticus 26.

Can you distinguish between the Mosaic and Abrahamic covenants in this chapter?

What are some of the differences between the two covenants?

After reading the passage use these questions as the basis for your discussion.

1. What stood out for you / what was interesting and why? (The Holy Spirit’s prompting)

2. What was the passage about / the main message / big idea? (The Word of God)

3. What should we do / how can we apply this message? (Faith in Action)

Most of this chapter has the Mosaic Covenant in view (the Old Covenant, summarised in the 10 Commandments). We can see this because it is a conditional covenant - it depends on the faithfulness of the people and has significant consequences for unfaithfulness.

The last section, which discusses the possibility of repentance, brings the Abrahamic Covenant into focus. This covenant is greater than the Mosaic covenant. It is greater because it is unconditional (it does not ultimately depend on the obedience of the people, instead, it relies on the faithfulness of God) and it is greater because it is permanent.

About this Plan

Old Testament Overview

This plan is designed for families (our girls were under 10 when we used it); it can also be used for personal devotion. Each day uses the same 3 questions to explore the text. The plan provides a comprehensive "bird's eye view" of the Old Testament; the aim is to understand the first phase of God's salvation plan through the Covenants (relationships) which He established with His people.
