Face to Face With Jesus - a Lenten MeditationSample
Jesus had the most unique conversational style where he caught someone at the most opportune time and went deep almost immediately with them. He didn’t beat around the bush with platitudes or flattery but just hit the nail on its head. When he spoke to the Samaritan woman it was no different. He made a huge claim about himself -“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The Samaritan woman had been married 5 times and was currently in a live-in situation with a man. She was obviously thirsting for something profound but was temporarily satiating her appetite with physical relationships. Jesus went straight to the heart of the matter by addressing the fact that only he can satisfy her deepest needs.
We are no different than that woman. We often satisfy our deepest needs with temporary fixes when in reality we need Jesus to fill those needs so that we don’t end up worshipping the false gods of this age; gods of wealth, success, prominence, etc. We can only worship God in spirit and in truth when we empty ourselves completely so that He can fill us up.
Questions to ask yourself
Where does my life feel empty?
Is my worship directed to God or to things/people?
