FEAR NO MORE

Fear has no place in the heart of God’s children. Even if the “wicked advance” or an “army besiege[s]” or “war break[s] out,” the people of God can remain confident and unafraid (vv. 2 – 3). While this mentality is much easier said than done, it is possible. David outlined the way forward in the face of such fearsome trials: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD” (v. 14). Sometimes fighting for faith looks like waiting on God to come through, standing in the strength he has provided for that moment. Jesus offered this reasoning for fighting fear when he said, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Mt 10:28 – 31). Jesus promises his presence and with it his peace: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33).

Jesus, help me to give fear no foothold in my life. Fill me with your presence and your peace. Amen.
