LAMENTS AND THE JUDGMENT THAT BRINGS HOPE

David’s lament in Psalm 6 expresses extreme discomfort and concern about his circumstances. Though the exact nature of David’s situation is unclear, David nevertheless called out to God, pleading for mercy and for deliverance from both his pain and his enemies. The Gospel accounts similarly describe Jesus as one who suffered at the hands of his enemies, as one who lamented and as one who prayed (e.g., Mk 14:32 – 35; Lk 23:20 – 25). Moreover, Luke was keen to point out that Jesus himself will deal with the problem of suffering as well as with the problem of evildoers. Hence, David’s words in Psalm 6:8 are reasserted in Jesus’ declaration, “Away from me, all you evildoers!” (Lk 13:27). These words appear in a context where Jesus promised to bring judgment to those who persist in their evil actions. Thus, as God’s people read this psalm and, at times, resonate with David’s plea for mercy and judgment in verses 9 – 10, they are reminded that Jesus has come in response to their laments and will bring mercy and judgment (Lk 17:26 – 30).
