#Jesus22 - Daily Devotionals

DAY 3 OF 42

In the Bible, the image of the tree appears about one hundred times. Often, the state of the tree and our relationship with God are being compared. Psalm 1 is about a magnificent example: a sturdy tree with strong branches. It bears fruit. It gives shade. It withstands storms and tempests. It is valuable. It is a beautiful and expressive image. Who would not like to claim it for himself/herself?

I think it is worthwhile to dig a little deeper into this image. The mere fact that the tree is close to the water does not guarantee that it will thrive. It is dependent on its root system. The roots are the tree's connection to the earth. It is through them that it takes in its nourishment. The roots provide it with its stability.

Have you ever thought about the roots of your life?
Being close to the water could mean that you live in a Christian, devout environment. You have friends who believe in Christ; you attend church services, watch podcasts, etc. But like the tree, living in such an environment does not guarantee a healthy relationship with God. What are your roots like? Are you firmly rooted in your faith? Are you drawing healthy nourishment from your environment? Do they dig deep so that you can withstand storms in life? We are often convinced that if most of our roots are healthy, that's enough. But sometimes a single rotten root is enough to damage the whole tree. The rot can spread. The toxins that enter the tree through this root can bring further damage and gradually damage the entire tree.

Do you know your roots? Is there bitterness, hurt, false beliefs, inferiority? Have abuse and disappointment caused individual roots to rot? Do you possibly not even know the root, but recognize rotten fruit in your life? Are there bad habits, addictions, repetitive unhealthy behavior?

ACTION STEP

I invite you today to talk with a good friend about the fruit in your life. Sometimes our friends can assess the state of our fruit better than we can. Ask Jesus to lead you to the root of it.
