AN IMPROMPTU PICNIC

When Queen Elizabeth II of England reached 90 years of age, the normally reserved British people celebrated, big time! Up and down the country there were events of all shapes and sizes, as communities gathered to celebrate and share food together.

Back in time to another event. But this picnic was not pre-arranged. So, when Jesus was confronted with 5,000 hungry men (and thousands more women and children), what did he do? He did what he always does. He met their needs. In every way.

Food? Where from? From God, along with a contribution from a lad whose mum had had the foresight to pack some bread rolls and a couple of fish in a basket. (He probably protested. ‘Mum! Do I have to have it?’ But, no doubt, she insisted.) Of course, Jesus could have fed all those people without using it. After all, he was present in the beginning and was responsible for creation. But, being Jesus, he graciously chose to use the simple fare given by a child and he longs to use what we can offer him. What might that be?

Can you find the moments when you can see God in action? Perhaps when Jesus blesses the bread and fish? When Jesus’ followers keep giving out more and more food? When everyone has had enough to eat? What would it have been like to be fed in that amazing way?
