They Could NotSample

THEY COULD NOT STAND IN THAT PLACE TO SEE THE RIGHTEOUS ONE HANGING ON THE CROSS.

Today, we will study the 5th and 6th saying of our Lord Jesus on the cross. The fifth saying on the cross: Jesus said, “I am thirsty”. John 19:28. 

‘I am thirsty’; a nothing more than a torture to the body. Let’s say you’ve walked about ten kilometres on a sunny day, there’s no shade to rest your body, you’ve completely ran out of energy and all that you want is a glass of cold water to revive yourself.

Here, I am talking about Jesus, who’s now hanging on the cross, great loss of blood, in such agony, he said, I am thirsty. “I am thirsty”- this is a grievance of a man, what aching scenes!

Our Lord is the maker of the ocean and the waters from above. If He had thought, He could have saved himself from the pain and made the clouds pour rain. But He did not! This shortest cry on the cross, tells us that He was fully human, very distinct in nature. This reminds us that He took all this suffering on himself, and just as he promised earlier in John 7: 37b, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink’. What He showed on the cross for us is a reminder that we will thirst for Him more. Do you thirst for Jesus? Have you turned from your sins? Do you pray or seek like Psalm 42: 1, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God?”

 The sixth saying on the cross:

Jesus said, it is finished. John 19: 30

Jesus said this triumphantly. He seemed to be broken on the cross but the victory was won already. The enemy has got no hold. All prophecies and promises have been fulfilled. The trial is over. All the pain that he endured, is finished. The purpose that he had visited men, is finished.

Those few faithless and scoffers, they could not see these agonizing scenes anymore but say that, ’we have killed a righteous One’ 

(Luke 23:48, when all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away.)

Take away:

Jesus paid it all, it is finished! The price for sin has already been paid. What are you waiting for? Believe, repent, come to Him!
