Grace Over Guilt
When my son was 15 months old, he was sick for a few days with diarrhea. I kept thinking about anything that could have made him sick. He did not get better. Then, my husband poured himself a glass of milk and immediately spit it out saying, “This milk is sour!” All along, for about 5 days, I had been feeding my son spoiled milk.
That night, I went to bed bawling. How could I not have tasted the milk? I beat myself up about it for days. How many mamas have felt this type of guilt? It could be the result of a mistake, just as mine was. It could be for something else, such as going back to work and having to leave your baby at a daycare. Whatever the reason was, each of us has dealt with some sort of mom guilt. I believe this is one of the hardest parts of being a mother. We find ourselves torn between our children and something else. At other times, the guilt is because we feel we are not doing enough. We buy organic, healthy food, but all our children want is mac & cheese. We want to spend time bonding with our newborn baby, but the toddler is crying for attention. Your teenager is mad at you again this week for another thing you did “wrong.” Mom guilt creeps in regardless of what age or stage our children are in.
When guilt tries to enter your heart and mind, go to God. He said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Receive this grace that we sing and learn about at church. It is God’s gift for you on days that you do not feel good enough. God’s grace is there for you every single day. He does not obsess or worry about the mess you are in, nor is He mad at you.
God created you to be very capable of doing this job. You have His Spirit to guide you; manifest the fruit of the Spirit. But He has also given us the gift of grace. It is His kindness and favor over you. He has taken away the guilt of your sins and replaced it with great love. God’s grace is enough even when you do not feel enough. Find rest in Him and in His amazing grace.
