Watch and Pray
Mark 13:33-34, 37
“Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come…keep watch. Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back…What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”
Christ’s call to watch and pray for his return has been a trumpet call that the Spirit has sounded in every generation. When the Church is alert and praying, she is responsive to God’s mission of sharing the gospel with all nations. The accountability and imminence of living with the expectation of Christ’s return at any moment changes our priorities. We live differently. We live watchful, prayerful, expectant lives. We live knowing this is not our home. This world and its pleasures will fade away. Jesus calls us to guard against distractions and spiritual sleepiness which dulls our senses and capacity to respond to his presence. We are to be self-controlled and alert, watching, waiting and praying for our part in God’s end-time mission purposes as we await his return.
Lord Jesus, come. Your return is my hope. Your presence is my life.
