Today’s verses are powerful in the way that they speak to the character of Jesus. Remember that Jesus had already predicted His death. The Jews continued in their unbelief that Jesus really was the Messiah even after witnessing miracle after miracle. Jesus had every right to feel rejected and defeated. But instead of wallowing in the dark days which were upon Him, Jesus demonstrated that He came not to be served, but to serve by humbling Himself and washing His disciples’ feet. It wasn’t a glamorous or clean job, but it was a profound example of how those of us who are in Christ should live our lives.

Are we seeking to serve or to be served? Are we waiting until we’re appreciated and in a good season to reciprocate love, encouragement, or generosity to others, or are we serving even in the midst of our suffering? Jesus, help us to humble ourselves and be willing to lay our lives down to serve others like You!
