She Reads Truth: Emmanuel

DAY 3 OF 28

Christ’s Birth is Prophesied in the Rich and Layered Scripture

Reflection

Scripture is fascinating in the way it is delicately woven and joined together to tell of a great mystery with a heroic ending. Generations and generations before Christ’s birth, we hear about the coming King from the Prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah speaks to the people of Israel and tells them that there will be a virgin birth, and that baby will be God with us, Immanuel.

Much of the book of Isaiah speaks of the fact that no earthly thing can save the Israelites. It is apparent that Israel is a fickle nation, and her people have fickle hearts. The men and women of Israel try to be good, but they are not good. Sin reigns in their hearts, even when they desire to do what is right.

The Psalmist in Psalm 85 asks if God will be angry forever, if His anger will last through generations. But, Isaiah speaks of a hope for Israel, a King that will be in the line of David and born to a virgin girl.

We have the same hope in this generation but, unlike the Israelites, we do not have to wait. Jesus is not just a future hope; He is a hope we can be secure in today. Emmanuel is God with us, He is King through the generations, prophesied in Isaiah and living today.

Prayer

God, thank you that your Scripture is layered and rich. Thank you that what you said would be has come to pass. Thank you for the good gift of Jesus, the God who walked with us on earth, born as a tiny baby. When we are tempted to doubt that you have good things for us, Lord, I pray that you’d bring this Ebenezer to mind. You promised a King would be born of a virgin girl and HE WAS.

Advent Action
