God Promises to Faithful Abraham That in His Seed All Nations of the Earth Shall Be Blessed
Reflection
It’s so fascinating to read through this series of scriptures with wonder, and yet not wonder at all.
In Abraham’s life we see many images of the Father and the Son. From God’s call for Abraham to leave his home and become a stranger in a foreign land (much like Christ left His home in Heaven), to Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his only son for the love of the Father (as God gave his only begotten Son as a sacrifice for all), to God’s provision of a substitute to save Isaac from death (as Jesus was provided as a substitute to save us from death).
In addition to the many parallels, there are also many beautiful and indisputably fulfilled promises: Abram and Sarai had a son, just as God promised. And indeed, God made Abraham into a great nation. And through him, all nations on Earth are blessed. John 8 tells us that Abraham saw the day of the Lord - and by faith, he did. (Oh, to have faith like father Abraham - for believing to truly be as good as seeing!)
And the coolest, most miraculous thing of all? Jesus’ words to the Jews:
“Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)
Christ was before Abraham and He was after Abraham. Christ’s incarnation and ultimate sacrifice was not Plan B. Even in Genesis as The Lord came to Abraham and told him to leave his country, to wait on a son, and to sacrifice that only son in obedience and faith… even then, Christ was. Christ was on the throne AND He was coming! Even then - and especially now! - there was hope.
Prayer
Father, thank you for your promises to us. Thank you for your callings on our lives. And most of all, thank you, Jesus, that before I was, you are. You hem us in. Teach us to obey you in faith. Make our faith so strong that it is as good as seeing you with our own eyes! Amen.
Advent Action
Our advent song today is 53 seconds long and is simply titled “Waiting”. When the song begins, close your eyes tightly and listen to the song in darkness, anticipating the Light that is to come. Before Christ came, the world was in darkness - in anticipation. Likewise, we as Christians await His second arrival. We are waiting, Sisters, but we are waiting on One who keeps His promises.
