Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 6 OF 181

Nice Boat, Mr. Noah
Read Genesis 6:9–7:24

This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God. Genesis 6:9

Did God really say He would destroy everything? Noah must have asked himself this a thousand times. The whole idea was absolutely terrifying – the ark, so huge and embarrassing. “What will people say? O God, please give me a sign. Maybe I will wait a while before I gather the animals…”

It often takes a lot of courage to obey God. People’s opinions, society’s expectations, peer and family pressures stand in our way. We end up living for others, seldom pleasing ourselves and hardly being aware of what God desires. That’s the problem: we listen to others more than we can hear God. Why doesn’t He speak more clearly? We are confused about His commands, so we hesitate to obey.

But Noah passed all these tests. ‘He did everything just as God commanded.’ What was his secret? It was his faith (Hebrews 11:7). By faith, Noah ‘in holy fear’ dared not question the logic of that big boat. He believed the flood was coming because God said so. He stood in awe of the Almighty. He recognised his lowly position as only a creature-man.

There was no design fault when God created man. Adam fell short by choice. Noah found favour by obedience. Through Noah, his family was saved and humankind given another chance. However, the problem with sin remained. But thanks be to God for the Lord Jesus Christ, for by His obedience, sinners are forever put right with God (Romans 5:19).

God is our Father. What similarities are there between knowing our parents’ expectations and discerning God’s will?
