Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume OneSample
Delete and Restart?
Read Genesis 5:1–6:8
The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. Genesis 6:6
The human race was a total disappointment and had become a heartache for God. He had tolerated their wickedness and evil for a long time. The prudent move would be to eliminate this source of pain quickly, once and for all.
Now Almighty God could just hit some ‘DELETE’ key and all humanity would instantly be gone, forever. The whole problem would simply disappear. Then, if so desired, He could ‘RESTART’ from ‘Adam and Eve before Genesis 3’. Yes, delete the trouble-causing fallen angels and serpent too. And definitely rethink on that ‘freedom to choose’ policy. All this would change the whole scenario very significantly because Jesus would no longer need to die for sin.
The only hindrance was Noah. The just God would not destroy the righteous with the wicked. So why did God not take Noah away, as with Enoch? Or destroy humankind during those 69 years between Enoch’s departure and Noah’s birth?
He could, but He did not. God resolves problems; He does not merely make them go away. No obstacle is too difficult for Him to handle, not even the problem of sin. And God has also offered to help us face our difficulties in life. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). He invites us to exchange our cares and weariness for His rest and peace.
'O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry, Everything to God in prayer.'
