DAY 49 OF 181

Peace with God
Read Leviticus 3:1-17

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26

Peace is as elusive as a butterfly. The tsunami-hit Acehnese were hoping for peace after the calamity struck Aceh. Decades of war between the independent fighters and the Indonesian army wearied the common folk. There was a short period of truce, but the peace they longed for was transient.

The fellowship offering is also known as the peace offering. The Contemporary English Version describes it as a ‘sacrifice to ask the Lord’s blessing’. In Hebrew the word ‘peace’ carries the thought of blessing, prosperity and happiness. By His death on the cross, Jesus became our peace offering. The Prince of Peace Himself enables us to be friends of God.

The Lord God of Israel wanted the newly freed people to love Him as a friend too. He knew they were terrified and fearful of Him. They begged Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die” (Exodus 20:19). Therefore God designed the fellowship offering to express His willingness to share a meal with them.

Only the best parts of the animal sacrifice were burned to be an aroma pleasing to God. They were all the fats, both kidneys and the covering of the liver. The people were prohibited to eat fat (v 16). (It certainly benefits us if we obey this decree!) The remainder of the sacrifice was eaten by the priest and the person making the offering. We have a glimpse of this celebration of thanksgiving as we partake in the Holy Communion Service.

1 John 1:7: If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.

What must we do when God’s peace eludes us?
