Love Is Not SelfishSample

Love Is Not Selfish

DAY 5 OF 5

A Life Marked by Love

As we conclude this series, the question remains: How do we actually live a life of love? We’ve seen that love is not selfish—it does not seek its own way but instead reflects Christ, prioritizes others, and pursues what is eternally good. But this isn’t something we can manufacture through effort alone. It must flow from a heart truly transformed by God.

The first thing to pursue is Christlikeness in everything. Every decision, attitude, and action should be shaped by the example of Jesus—not an imagined version of Him, but the Jesus revealed in Scripture. Before making a choice, ask yourself if it aligns with what He has taught and demonstrated. Real love follows His lead.

The second pursuit is to aim at pleasing God in all things. Whether a choice is big or small, the primary question should be whether or not it honors God. Living for His approval, rather than the approval of others or our own desires, frees us from the grip of selfishness and redirects us toward a life that is truly meaningful.

The third pursuit is seeking what is best for others. Selfishness isolates, but love builds. Imagine a community where everyone genuinely considers the needs of others above their own. This is what the church is meant to be—a reflection of Christ’s love in action. Jesus said that the world would recognize His disciples by their love for one another. When we actively seek what is best for those around us, our lives point to the reality of Christ.

The fourth pursuit is aim for true transformation rather than appearances. It is easy to look unselfish while still clinging to our own way. We can say the right words, perform acts of service, and still resent not being first. But love isn’t about looking the part—it’s about a heart that truly delights in generosity, serving, and putting others first. True love isn’t forced; it flows naturally from a life surrendered to Christ.

This kind of love is only possible through Him. God has poured His love into our hearts by the Spirit, and as we submit to Him daily, He changes us from the inside out. The goal is not to simply act loving, but to become people who truly love.

As this series ends, reflect on these questions: Will love shape your life? Will you yield to Christ and let His love guide your words, actions, and decisions? Don’t settle for a love that is only for show. Ask God to change your heart so that love—not selfishness—is what defines you.
