Love Is Not SelfishSample

Love Seeks Christ’s Interests
If love isn’t selfish, then what is its focus? What does it pursue? The answer is clear: love seeks what Christ desires. Paul praised Timothy for this very reason. Unlike others who put their own concerns first, Timothy genuinely cared about people because he cared about what mattered to Jesus. His love was not self-serving; it was shaped by a desire to serve Christ by serving others.
This mindset doesn’t come naturally. By default, we view life through the lens of how things affect us—what is convenient, what benefits us, what we enjoy. That’s why Paul reminds us in Philippians that we are to put others ahead of ourselves, considering their needs more important than our own. This doesn’t mean we ignore our responsibilities, but it does mean that love pushes us beyond self-interest.
And what is the greatest need every person has? Not comfort, not success, not even temporary happiness, but salvation. Love doesn’t simply affirm people in whatever they choose; it pursues their eternal good. It’s why Paul told the Corinthians he was willing to give everything for the sake of their souls. He understood that real love is costly. It requires speaking truth even when it’s uncomfortable. If someone spends their whole life content with us but stands before God unprepared, can we really say we loved them well?
This is the love of Christ. Though He was fully God, He did not cling to His rights but humbled Himself, becoming a servant and giving up everything—even His life—for the sake of others. This is what real love looks like: sacrificial, selfless, unwavering in its pursuit of what is right.
Take a look at your priorities. Where do your time, energy, and focus go? Do they reflect a heart that values what Christ values? Loving others the way Jesus does will cost you something—your comfort, your plans, maybe even your reputation. But a love that seeks Christ’s interests will always be worth more than whatever you give up. Today, ask God to reshape your heart so that love leads your decisions.
