Wisdom PsalmsSample

Although Psalm 128 is categorized as a Psalm of Wisdom, it reads as practical encouragement, uplifting to the recipient. The psalmist begins by declaring that people are blessed when they fear the Lord and walk in His ways. Psalm 119:1 expresses a similar idea. “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord!” Therefore, we can trust that God blesses those who walk in His ways; there is joy in following Him.
What does it mean to walk in God’s ways, though? Thankfully, we have a perspective the original audience did not. We have the New Testament where Jesus gives us the answer. In Matthew 22:38-29 Jesus issues two commands for those seeking to walk in His way: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the great first commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” To walk in God’s ways, we are to love Him and others as we love ourselves.
Psalm 128 is not without practical wisdom. The psalmist is clear in asserting the blessed person will enjoy a fruitful life for himself and his family. When we follow God, there should be an overflow in our life and the life of our family. Take heart in knowing that God cares for you and your family; He delights in healthy families.
Finally, you might have noticed the repetition in this psalm. Verses 1 and 4 both say there is a blessing found in fearing the Lord. This is also told to us in Psalm 112:1: “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!” Even today, we are called to fear God and receive blessings by walking in His ways and delighting ourselves in Him.
- What does it look like to fear the Lord?
- In what ways are you walking in the way of the Lord? If you aren’t sure, ask God in prayer to direct your steps.
Prayer: God, help me fear you and walk in your ways all the days of my life.
