Asaph, a musician and singer, is identified as the author of Psalm 73. He begins this “song” by declaring that God is good to His people. Yet even though God is good, Asaph wrestles throughout this psalm with his own shortcoming, his brokenness. He also acknowledges the wicked, the deeds of the evil. Just when it seems the brokenness will win out, we observe a shift in verse 23 as Asaph reminds himself, and the listener, of the truth of God.
Psalm 73:23-26 says, “Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward, you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and heart may fail, but God is my heart’s strength and portion forever.” (ESV) Asaph reminds himself that even in brokenness, God is still with him. Asaph understands that God is all he needs. None of us are sentenced to remain in our brokenness forever. God will guide us.
Psalm 63:8 echoes a similar message David wrote to Asaph, “My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Let these words remind us that even in our brokenness, God is with us, He holds us, and our souls should always cling to Him in all seasons.
Asaph ends by declaring that it is suitable for him to draw near to God. James wrote that when one draws near to God, God will draw near to him (James 4:8). Let us all draw near to God, for it is good; He is our safe place and refuge all the days of our lives and even in eternity.
- Has there been a time in your life when you found yourself clinging to God? Reflect on that.
- In what ways would you describe God has been your strength and refuge?
Prayer: God, thank you that when my heart fails, you are my strength. Thank you for always being with me, loving me, and caring for me.
