Healing Family Relationships Through Prayer

DAY 5 OF 6

The first four days of this study have focused on our personal prayer life in that they haven't directly involved the family member with whom we are in conflict. If it is possible to pray together with your family member, I strongly encourage you to try it.

I understand this may not be possible. A relationship can be so broken that all communication has been cut off. It may be that your family member is not walking in a relationship with God, or they simply have no interest or desire to pray with you. However, if you believe there is a chance that your sibling, spouse, parent, or child would be willing to pray with you, either in person or over the phone, go for it!

My wife and I recently celebrated thirty years of marriage together, and like most couples, we have our fair share of conflict. One area where God has helped us to improve as a couple is that we are quick to pray together when arguments arise.

In moments of conflict, praying is the last thing I want to do! Prayer requires that I humble myself. Prayer requires that I lower the walls of my heart, both to the Lord and to my wife. I have lost track of the number of times we have gone to God in the midst of conflict, asking for His help, and the Holy Spirit rushes in and softens my heart toward her, and softens her heart toward me, and then He provides us with a path out of our anger and struggle.

Reflection Question: What might happen if you asked your family member to pray with you about your relationship? Are you willing to take that risk?
