Get Your Minds Right: A Devotional for Men
As men, God has called us to be difference makers—leaders in our homes, churches, and communities. This responsibility requires a mindset grounded in faith and obedience. In Romans 8:5, Paul writes, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” To fulfill our calling, we must set our minds on the things of God.
The Mindset of a Difference Maker
A few years ago, during a close football game, Bobby Wagner, the middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks, encouraged his teammates with a simple phrase: “Get your minds right.” This rallying cry applies to us as well. God has called us to get our minds right, to focus on His truth, and to step into the role He has prepared for us. Psalm 128 outlines the blessings that come to a man who fears the Lord and walks in His ways. God promises that such a man will be blessed, his wife will flourish, and his children will grow strong like olive trees. We need to be difference makers in the lives of our children and this starts in our homes.
Leading with Courage
In Joshua 1, God commissions Joshua to lead His people into the promised land. Three times He commands Joshua to “Be strong and courageous” (Joshua 1:6-9). Joshua’s success depended on his obedience to God’s Word and his willingness to trust God’s promises. Similarly, as men, we are called to lead with courage, obey God’s Word, and trust His faithfulness.
We also see this principle in the example of Peter walking on water. When Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked above the waves. But the moment he focused on the storm, he began to sink. Jesus’ words to Peter echo His message to us: “Keep your eyes on me.” When life’s challenges arise, we must fix our gaze on Christ, trusting Him to guide us through the storm. God’s best is always found on the other side of obedience.
A Legacy of Leadership
Joshua’s leadership culminates in his declaration in Joshua 24:15: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” This declaration reminds us that leadership starts at home. As husbands and fathers, we set the spiritual tone for our families. When we choose to serve the Lord, we model faithfulness for our wives and children, creating a legacy that will impact generations.
Paul reinforces this in Titus 2:6-8, encouraging men to be self-controlled, to lead by example, and to demonstrate integrity and seriousness. When we live this way, we not only honor God but also silence critics who may seek to undermine our testimony.
The Call to Action
God has called us to be strong and courageous leaders. He has entrusted us with the responsibility of guiding our families and influencing our communities. This begins with getting our minds right—aligning our thoughts and actions with God’s will. As difference makers, we must:
1. Set our minds on God’s Word: Obedience to His commands leads to His best for our lives.
2. Lead with courage and faith: Trust that God will be with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9).
3. Model integrity and self-control: Our example speaks louder than our words.
4. Declare our commitment: Like Joshua, boldly proclaim, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Let’s rise to the challenge, knowing that God has equipped us to be the men He created us to be. Get your minds right, and step boldly into your role as a difference maker.
About this Plan

EMPCOA, or “Enemy’s Most Probable Course of Action,” is a military intelligence strategy for anticipating and outsmarting the enemy. This principle applies spiritually, as today’s battlefield is marked by fatherlessness, crime, poverty, addiction, and broken lives. As men of God, we face a relentless enemy seeking to destroy our families and pull us from biblical truth. Understanding his tactics is key to standing firm. This devotional series equips fathers with God’s principles for fatherhood and spiritual leadership, helping them defend their families against Satan’s attacks and remain strong in faith.
