Faithful Fatherhood

DAY 6 OF 10

Passing the Faith to the Next Generation: A Devotional for Fathers

The greatest responsibility we have as fathers is to pass our faith onto our children. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 reminds us, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Faith is a gift, and it’s our job to ensure our children grasp its power and meaning, equipping them to navigate relationships, emotions, and life’s challenges with God at the center.

Teaching the Intellectual Side of Faith

Passing on faith begins with teaching Scripture. The Bible contains over 200 foundational stories—each packed with lessons for every stage of life. For instance, Daniel in the lion’s den teaches us to obey God rather than man, even when it’s difficult. Similarly, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego’s refusal to bow to an idol reminds us to stand firm in our convictions, no matter the cost.

Scripture memorization is also key. As Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Teaching our children to internalize God’s Word ensures they have His truth to draw upon in life’s difficult moments.

Basic theology helps children grasp life’s bigger picture. Teach them the truths of creation, the fall, redemption through Christ, and the church as God’s designed community. Understanding these core principles gives them a biblical worldview and prepares them to face life with confidence and clarity.

Encouraging the Experiential Side of Faith

Faith is not just taught; it’s lived. Show your children how to experience faith daily through prayer. A powerful, practical prayer to teach them is, “Lord, how can I fit into Your plans today?” This shifts their focus from self to God and opens their eyes to His work in the world. At the end of the day, ask them, “How did you see God at work today?” These reflections help them recognize His presence in everyday life.

Worship and service are also essential. Whether singing together at church or helping a neighbor in need, these activities demonstrate what it means to live out faith. Use creativity, as Jesus did with parables, to make lessons engaging and memorable.

Faith at Home: Where It All Comes Together

The home is where faith takes root. While church is a valuable partner in spiritual growth, the most impactful lessons happen at home. This is the “behind-the-wheel” training, where children learn to apply faith to their emotions, decisions, and relationships. Create opportunities to discuss God’s Word in everyday moments—on the way to church, during meals, or at bedtime.

A Legacy of Faith

Faith isn’t static; it grows with us through life’s stages. Help your children bring their faith into each new phase of development, encouraging them to see it as a lifelong journey. Proverbs 22:6 promises, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

As fathers, we hold the unique privilege of shaping our children’s spiritual foundation. Be intentional in teaching, modeling, and living out your faith. Lead them to become disciples of Jesus who will carry His light into the world. This is your most important job, and its impact will echo for generations.

About this Plan

Faithful Fatherhood

EMPCOA, or “Enemy’s Most Probable Course of Action,” is a military intelligence strategy for anticipating and outsmarting the enemy. This principle applies spiritually, as today’s battlefield is marked by fatherlessness, crime, poverty, addiction, and broken lives. As men of God, we face a relentless enemy seeking to destroy our families and pull us from biblical truth. Understanding his tactics is key to standing firm. This devotional series equips fathers with God’s principles for fatherhood and spiritual leadership, helping them defend their families against Satan’s attacks and remain strong in faith.
