5 Days of Refuge in God’s Arms

DAY 5 OF 5

Silence and Suffering

On Friday, Christ was crucified. On Saturday, the world was silent. No one knew that Sunday was coming.

We often want to jump to the celebration of Christ’s resurrection without remembering that the fulfillment of the gospel held tremendous pain and suffering. As Jesus hung on the cross, bearing the weight and sin of the world, he spoke directly to few. In his deepest moments of suffering, he made sure his widowed mother, Mary, would be cared for.

It’s easy to look forward to Sunday until we find ourselves in our own Saturdays. It’s easy to assume no one sees us. But we can’t have the promises of resurrection without the silence and the suffering.

Prayer: Lord, when my “Sunday” seems more than a few days away, let me cling to the comfort that the one who holds the world holds me in my suffering. He saw his mother, a widow, at the foot of the cross, and he still sees, loves, and fights for me.
