Where is God in Grief?

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock.

Psalm 18:2

When I look back on the days before loss came knocking on my door, I both smile and cry. This is grief. It’s a place where we can be both joyful and sorrowful at the same time. Our lives have been turned inside out, and we begin to wonder, Where do we go from here? Is God even still here? On the days when I look behind me, I stumble. On the days I look in front of me, I stumble. If I concentrate on the past or try to move toward the future there is heartache at every turn. What do I do? It’s in these moments that I fall to my knees and cry out, “God, please help me.” Grief changes you. I don’t believe I will ever be the same person I once was, but I’m still a person who believes. I’m confident that when I cry out to God, He is there for me. He promised never to leave me nor forsake me, and I trust His word to be true. After suffering a loss our hearts are shattered into a million little pieces. We wonder if we’ll ever be whole again. Yet, when we are at our lowest, if we reach up and touch the hem of His garment, our healing will begin to take place.

Lord, You know that my heart and my emotions are everywhere right now. One moment I’m up, and the next moment I’m down. I am always missing my loved one, and some days I don’t know how I’m going to survive the next hour. But I do know that You and Your Word are true and constant. No matter how I feel, I’m going to place my trust in You, Jesus. I commit my way to You.
