One Day at a Time

Nevertheless, do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.

2 Peter 3:8

Life can change in the blink of an eye. We’ve all heard the saying “what a difference a day makes,” but when your loved one runs ahead to heaven, time takes on a whole different meaning. A year without them can seem just like yesterday and some days it can feel like a millennium. As we wander this ever-changing road of grief, we can be fine one moment, and in tears the next. Throughout it all, whether on the mountaintop or in the valley, God’s peace and mercy are new every morning. In His all-encompassing love and compassion, He knows the ache of missing our loved ones.

God works in mysterious ways. He can shine light into the darkest places of our lives. Even the worst experiences will not destroy us—at least not forever. Tears and sadness are outward signs of all the love we will continue to carry in our hearts for our loved ones. As we see the days on the calendar go by, let us hold on, as it’s yet another day closer to being in our true home—heaven—with our loved ones.

“It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed.”

1 Corinthians 15:52

Father God, though You don’t count time as I do, help me to keep my eyes on You, knowing one day all those who love You will be together again. Help me to remember that heaven is my home, and my loved one has just gone ahead before me. Until then, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You.
