The Words We Use Matter!

DAY 3 OF 3

DAY 3

How do I speak to others?

Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” Luke‬ ‭4‬:‭22‬ ‭NLT‬‬

If I want to be like Jesus, then I need to practice speaking to others the way Jesus would. For me, this requires that I pause and think before I speak. As a younger woman I had a tendency to speak and then suffer the consequences of speaking words that were not helpful. Words have the ability to tear down or build up.

Jesus said that the words we use come from our heart.

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. - Jesus. Luke 6:45 NLT

When we work on filling our heart with Jesus and His words, we are more likely to speak the kinds of words He would speak; in manner and tone, He would speak them.

Today, let’s take responsibility for the words we speak over others. Let’s leave them with the kind of experience they would have with Jesus.

Questions to Ponder OR Action

1. When was the last time I spoke harsh or unkind words over someone? Do I need to apologize? How could I have reframed what I said in a gracious way?

2. What is one thing I could do to fill my heart with Jesus and His words?

3. Pause and think before you speak. Ask yourself these questions before you say something you may regret, “Do I really need to say this? Will this help or hinder our relationship?”

Prayer:

Today, let’s pray the same prayer as the Psalmist.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Ps 19:14 NLT

Amen 🙏🏽
