His Name Is Jesus Christ

About 500 years ago, a 31-year-old man named Jerome was losing his spiritual battle against the devil. While we don’t know the details of Jerome’s sins, we do know he was in despair, discouraged over his own weakness and seeming inability to stand strong in his faith. That’s when an old friend and former roommate wrote him a letter. After giving Jerome some practical advice about how to battle the devil, this friend concluded his letter by writing this: “When the devil throws our sins up to us and declares we deserve death and hell, we ought to [say]: ‘I admit that I deserve death and hell. What of it? Does this mean that I shall be sentenced to eternal damnation? By no means. For I know One who suffered and made a satisfaction in my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Where he is, there I shall be also.’ Yours, Martin Luther.”

That is how you and I resist the devil and force his evil forces to retreat. You and I may be sinners, so weak in so many ways, but we know One who suffered for us. His name is Jesus Christ. And where he is, we shall be also.

The apostle Paul teaches us to “put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (Ephesians 6:11). Nothing guards your heart and your head quite like the Son of God who suffered for you.
