THE CONNECTION: THE WITH-GOD LIFE
Today brings us to Step 11. (Can you believe we’re almost finished?) The goal of this step is beautifully simple: to improve our conscious contact with God. This step isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Even the smallest step toward God makes a difference. You might be surprised at how often you get distracted as you start to put intentionality here. But be encouraged: if you engage with the Father once more today than you did yesterday, that’s an improvement. Lifelong journey, remember?
At this stage, we shift from playing defense—overcoming our defects and making amends—to playing offense. Instead of just avoiding wrong thoughts, we actively fill our minds with life-giving ones. As Paul writes in Philippians 4:8, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Our minds are the key to our spiritual lives. It’s true that the thoughts we dwell on shape who we become. When left on autopilot, our minds often drift toward self-obsession, worry, or anger. But we have the freedom to choose what we think about. When we direct our thoughts toward God—His goodness, His presence, His guidance—we find peace and clarity.
Living in conscious contact with God doesn’t mean thinking about nothing but God. It means inviting Him into your thoughts throughout the day. Picture this: walking through a tough situation with a trusted friend beside you. Their presence makes you feel safe and supported. How much more will God’s presence, when acknowledged and invited, transform your daily life?
This step helps us notice where our minds are dwelling. Are we focused on fear, frustration, or failure? Or are we tuning into God’s love, peace, and wisdom? Being mindful of God allows us to live with greater purpose and hope.
Today’s Invitation:
Take five minutes to sit quietly with God. Close your eyes and notice your thoughts without judgment. What’s filling your mind? Then, as you go about your day, pause periodically to ask, “Where is my mind right now?” Redirect your thoughts to God, trusting that He is present with you in every moment.
Let this be a day where your conscious contact with God grows.
