The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7Sample

Is there a difference between judging someone and using wisdom to discern someone’s character? Yes. Jesus does not command His disciples to simply tolerate anyone and anything. The Bible is full of instruction about using wisdom, external council and common sense to discern the contexts of our lives. However, Jesus’ command to “judge not” is a heart command.
Consider what takes place when a court-appointed judge makes a judgement on someone. That person, once judged, is defined by that judgement. They are guilty or they are not guilty.
Likewise, when we judge we define someone. This is what Jesus is warning us about. How you define someone reveals the state of your own heart. Are you defining people out of jealousy, pity, for the sake of saving your own reputation? We are encouraged to utilise the gift of wisdom for discernment, but we are warned not to judge others. Leave that work up to the ultimate Judge - God the Father.
We can trust Him because He judged us not according to our sins but according to Christ’s righteousness.
Today, ponder this: How have you defined people in your mind, and what does that reveal about your heart? Is there a person that you have judged recently? Take time to pray and ask for your heart to see them as Jesus sees them.

About this Plan

“You have heard it said…” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to rebuild and reform our understanding of life in His Kingdom. In Matthew 5-7, He challenges the religious traditions of His day and the competing worldviews of our own. His words are a call to transformation—a new way to live under His reign. As Jesus lays the foundation for His Kingdom, we are invited to tear down false beliefs and build our lives on His truth.
