The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7Sample

The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

DAY 3 OF 39

Put yourself in the sandals of someone in the crowd that day as Jesus stands on the mountain preaching. You sit discreetly on the edge. With so many people gathered in one place, there must be something going on. You listen attentively to the words of Jesus. Is it something new, or even revolutionary?

No! In fact, Jesus says something quite the opposite: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets”. No rebellion here! He goes on to describe Himself as coming “to fulfil” the Law and the Prophets. That’s a big statement. What does he mean?

For starters, Jesus declares that the Word of God all the way down to the smallest letter and pen stroke or “jot and tittle”, will not change – not now, not ever! Therefore, you shouldn’t pick and choose from God’s Word when it comes to obedience.

He also implies that the Old Testament points to and foreshadows His life, mission, suffering, and ultimate triumph. Jesus sees Himself as the culmination of the Bible’s redemptive story!

What does this mean for us? Jesus does not mince words. Our obedience should not be surface level like “that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law”. Instead, it requires deep, inner transformation — something only He can do for us. Such “will be called great in the kingdom of heaven”.

Today, ponder this: As you reflect on different areas of your life, is there a particular area that comes up when you hear Jesus’ clear call to obedience? Give thanks to Jesus who has fulfilled the Law so that we do not follow His commands in our own strength, but in His! Ask the Holy Spirit to keep transforming your heart in the areas where Jesus is calling you to obedience.

About this Plan

The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7

“You have heard it said…” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to rebuild and reform our understanding of life in His Kingdom. In Matthew 5-7, He challenges the religious traditions of His day and the competing worldviews of our own. His words are a call to transformation—a new way to live under His reign. As Jesus lays the foundation for His Kingdom, we are invited to tear down false beliefs and build our lives on His truth.
