The Rebuild: Matthew 5-7Sample

I’m confident that you would agree that a meal without salt is not one worth eating. In a similar way, trying to take in a beautiful landscape while it is pitch dark is pointless. Salt brings flavour out of food and light illuminates what is meant to be seen and taken in.
Jesus’ words in Matthew’s gospel in chapter 5 are confronting if we take a moment to consider our own lives. As God’s people, do we bring gospel flavour to the lives of those around us? Do we bring gospel illumination to the world around us? Are we a City on a Hill?
In Isaiah, the prophet speaks of how Israel, God’s people, are meant to be this shining light of hope in an ever darkening world. However, God’s people of old continued to dwell in the darkness. Likewise, we as God’s New Testament people often lurk in the darkness and prefer to keep our saltiness to ourselves. Thanks be to God that Jesus brings gospel light and gospel flavour to each of us! Ask the Holy Spirit to work through you today to be salt and light in the world around you.
Today, ponder this: In what ways might you be living in darkness instead of in Jesus’ kingdom of light? Pray that the Holy Spirit would illuminate your heart once again with the light of the gospel. Ask God to reveal to you those in your life who He wants you to be salt and light to and the way in which to be a 'City on a Hill to them.

About this Plan

“You have heard it said…” In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus begins to rebuild and reform our understanding of life in His Kingdom. In Matthew 5-7, He challenges the religious traditions of His day and the competing worldviews of our own. His words are a call to transformation—a new way to live under His reign. As Jesus lays the foundation for His Kingdom, we are invited to tear down false beliefs and build our lives on His truth.
