Christian DiscernmentSample

Discernment of Spirits
In our lives, we are not only called to discern moral choices and relationships but also to be vigilant about the spiritual forces at play. Ephesians 6 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil. Evil is often subtle, cloaked in half-truths and deception, as we see in the serpent's temptation of Eve in Genesis. The devil, as the father of lies, distorts God's truth, making sin appear attractive or even justified. That’s why discernment is so vital—we must be able to recognize when a thought or decision is influenced by evil, even when it appears harmless or even desirable.
To effectively discern the presence of evil, we need to be mindful of our vulnerabilities. The enemy often attacks where we are weakest, whether it’s in our marriages, our relationships, or even our involvement with church. Just as Jesus was tempted in the wilderness during His weakest moment, we, too, can be tempted when we are most vulnerable. Discernment is like spiritual counterintelligence—recognizing the schemes of the enemy and standing firm in the truth of God’s Word. The devil’s intent is always to destroy, but by being spiritually aware and vigilant, we can resist his attacks and protect the blessings God has given us.
Closing Prayer:
"Lord, we thank You for the wisdom You have provided in discerning the forces at work in our lives. Help us to remain vigilant against the subtle lies of the enemy and to stand firm in Your truth. Strengthen our hearts and minds, Lord, that we may recognize evil and resist it with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Lead us away from temptation and protect us from the evil one. May our discernment bring glory to You, strengthen our faith, and bless those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."
Discussion Question:
How can we become more aware of the subtle ways the enemy tries to influence our decisions, and what steps can we take to resist these temptations in our daily lives?
