Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God

“I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

God loves us human beings and He has our eternal happiness in mind. However, that does not mean that people who belong to God always have an easy life. They can also get sick, have financial worries, get depressed or be treated unfairly. Believers may even experience difficulties because of their faith. How can this be reconciled with God's love? Does He love us less than we thought He did?

For an answer, let's look at the Lord Jesus. God the Father loved Him fully, even before the world existed. But did that love prevent Jesus from suffering? No, not at all. God sent Him to earth to die on a cross.

Believers belong to Jesus. Like Him, they face suffering. Paul mentions “tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword.” But none of that can separate us from God's love. In fact, many believers have experienced that, through these difficulties, they have become more closely connected to the Lord Jesus and strengthened in their hope of eternal life. For example, the apostle Peter says from his own experience, “Rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed.” (1 Peter 4:13)
