Reading With the People of God #11 Blessed

DAY 14 OF 31

Focus of the month: (The Beatitudes)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Matthew 5:3-12

The Glory of God’s Presence

In 1 Kings 8, Solomon brings the ark of the covenant into the newly completed temple. This moment is the climax of Israel’s worship—God’s presence, symbolized by the ark, fills the temple with a cloud of glory. It is a powerful reminder that the temple was not just a building; it was the place where God chose to dwell among His people. Solomon acknowledges that God is faithful, keeping His covenant and fulfilling His promises.

Yet, even in this grand moment, Solomon recognizes a profound truth: “But will God indeed dwell on the earth?” (1 Kings 8:27). The temple was magnificent, but it was only a shadow of something greater—the true dwelling of God among His people in Jesus Christ.

Urgency in Reconciliation

In Matthew 5:25-26, Jesus speaks of settling matters quickly with an adversary. While this passage has a legal context, it points to a deeper spiritual urgency—reconciliation before judgment. Just as the temple was a place where Israel could seek atonement, Jesus calls us to make things right with others before it is too late.

The presence of God in the temple was a sign of His mercy and faithfulness. But Jesus, the true temple, came to bring ultimate reconciliation between God and man. If God has gone to such great lengths to restore us, how much more should we seek to live in peace with others?

Reflection & Application

The glory of God once filled the temple, but now, through Christ, we are called to be vessels of His presence. If we have received such mercy, how can we reflect it by seeking reconciliation with others today?

Prayer:
Lord, You are faithful to Your promises, and Your presence brings life and peace. Help me to live in the light of Your mercy, making things right with others as You have made things right with me. May I be a temple where Your presence dwells, reflecting Your grace to the world. Amen.
