Reading With the People of God #11 Blessed

DAY 13 OF 31

Focus of the month: (The Beatitudes)

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
- Matthew 5:3-12

A Right Heart

In Matthew 5:21 Jesus begins this topic of anger against others and discord among neighbors with the words: "You have heard it said." When the Bible is quoted it is stated; "It is written," so Jesus is addressing the oral traditions passed down from the Rabbi as teaching tools. He is not correcting the Law, but the principles of men added to the Law.

The traditions of men only applied the Law to the outward and obvious keeping of the Law, but Jesus is saying the external is not enough and is not acceptable to God. In Mark 7:13, Jesus is quoted as saying; The traditions of men have made the Word of God to no effect. Just doing the right things means nothing to God without the cleansing from within that only comes in Christ. I Samuel 16:7 and Psalm 51:16-17

In His teaching of Christian ethics, Jesus is saying that the root of murder is hatred and anger and has no place in a heart given to God. We are to settle matters quickly with the goal of peace and harmony for the good of all. We must be careful to remember the beatitudes that prefaced the entire Sermon on the Mount and included the blessing of the pure in heart and add a blessing for peacemakers. It is not enough to do good but we must be good, only possible when we are good in Christ’s righteousness.
