What Do Christians Believe?

DAY 8 OF 19

Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man

And the angel answered [Mary], ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.’” (Luke 1:35)

The holy Son of God, born from an ordinary young woman. This sounds incredible, yet it really happened. This event turned the world upside down and ushered in a new era. God the Son entered our world as a little baby. He became a man.

Why did He do this? “For us men and for our salvation,” says the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed. In so doing, it echoes John, who says, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.” (1 John 4:9)

That we may live is not a given. Our first ancestors rebelled against God and, therefore, had to die. We all inherited their sinful nature, and therefore, we too are “dead in the trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). But God did not abandon us to our fate. To save us, He came to earth. He put down His glory and became a helpless baby. This is really proof of unimaginable love!

About this Plan

What Do Christians Believe?

In 2025, the worldwide church celebrates the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, an assembly representing all of Christendom. At this council, people tried to state and affirm the Christian faith in the triune God. This reading plan studies the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed to see what Christians throughout history have confirmed to be the core of their faith.
