Don't forget God in the good times

After Gideon’s incredible victory, the Israelites enjoyed peace for 40 years. But when Gideon died, they quickly turned away from God and fell back into idolatry. This part of the story serves as a sobering reminder that success can sometimes lead to spiritual complacency. When things are going well, it’s easy to forget our dependence on God. We can begin to rely on our own strength or take credit for victories that belong to Him. But just as Gideon’s success came from God alone, so does ours.

Take a moment to reflect on the blessings and victories in your life. Are you staying close to God in the good times, or has success caused you to drift? True peace and fulfilment come from walking daily with Him, not just turning to Him in times of need. In Deuteronomy 6:6–7, God instructs us to ‘impress [these words] on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up’ (NIV).

We are called not only to remember God’s goodness but to teach the next generation of His wonders. Just as the Israelites were reminded of God’s faithfulness through their stories, we must continually pass on His goodness to our children and those who come after us.

Let’s learn from the Israelites’ mistakes and remain faithful to God, not only in the battles but also in the seasons of peace. May we be intentional in teaching our children about God’s mighty works and His unchanging faithfulness.
