The Bible for Young Explorers: John

DAY 4 OF 7

C S Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis, or ‘Jack’ to his friends, wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, including The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – have you read them? He thought that Jesus’ crazy teachings could mean one of only two things: either he was a madman, or he really was the Son of God. Because surely just a ‘good man’ wouldn’t make the sort of claims as Jesus did. ‘Good men’ don’t claim to be the Son of God!

Claiming to be God

Either Jesus struggled with grammar lessons – ‘you can’t use “I am” for something in the past’ – or there’s something else going on here. In the Old Testament, God revealed his personal name to Moses at the burning bush – ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ Jesus deliberately used this special name as if it belonged to him. Despite being thirty years old, he claimed to be present in the past. The Jews got what he meant and picked up rocks to stone him. Do you get who he was claiming to be? Can you trust him?
