Leading Well: 5 Choices for Christian Leaders a 5 - Day Plan by Michele C. Walker, Ph.D.Sample
Esther Chose Courage
Who can say but that you have been elevated to the palace for just such a time as this?
Fear often keeps us from pursuing the goals we know are important to ourselves and the organization we lead. While we might face real obstacles, it’s usually fear—fear of failure, fear of success, or fear of the unknown—that holds us back from doing what needs to be done.
Esther, a newly crowned queen, was placed in a position of influence "for such a time as this." Her uncle Mordecai urged her to approach the king and intercede for her people. Initially, Esther hesitated, fearing the risk to her life and the uncertainty of the outcome.
It’s easy to let fear control us. When faced with God’s call, we might come up with reasons why we cannot or should not act. But excuses only delay our progress and keep us from realizing our true purpose.
God often places us in challenging situations to grow our faith and skills and to accomplish His plans. Instead of focusing on what might go wrong, we must focus on what God is doing. When we feel a strong call to act, we must move forward, trusting that God will go ahead of us and will guide and equip us.
Esther chose to be courageous, ultimately playing a crucial role in saving her people. We, too, may be placed in situations where our response can make a significant difference. As we step out despite our fears, we’ll see more clearly the path God has set before us.
So, let’s confront our fears and take that step toward our goals. Trust that God is with us, and He will guide us every step of the way.
Reflection Questions
- What specific fear is holding you back from pursuing your goal, and how can you address it?
- How can you rely on God’s promises to overcome your fears and take action?
Leadership Action
Seek God’s Guidance: Set aside time to ask God for wisdom in your leadership role. Commit to acting on what He reveals, trusting that He has placed you in this position for His purpose.
Let's Pray
Lord, fear often stops us in our tracks, but we trust that You’ve called us to act and that You will be with us. Help us to face our fears and move forward with confidence, knowing that You will guide us. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
